While South Korea invests $960 million in mandatory AI curriculum and China trains 3 million teachers in AI literacy, we're stuck scaling the same old pedagogy with shinier tools.
The divide isn't just about access, it's far more insidious:
Student A: Personal device, subscription platforms, AI tutors with personalized pacing, immediate feedback, English-language sophistication, parental guidance on AI literacy. Result? AI as a thinking partner.
Student B: Shared family device, intermittent internet, free basic tools, vernacular language with translation gaps, literal AI responses that miss nuance, no instruction on how to use AI effectively. Result? AI as a glorified search engine.
COVID-19 exposed this brutally; premium schools went online seamlessly while government schools scrambled.
Here's what keeps me up at night:
The rural student isn't less intelligent. They're working with one hand tied behind their back, facing language barriers (most sophisticated AI works best in English), content gaps, lower-quality vernacular AI, and zero AI literacy training.
This isn't accidental. It reflects where development resources, training data, and market incentives flow. EdTech companies are aggressively marketing premium products to anxious middle-class parents who can pay, while policy remains fragmented.
The uncomfortable truth? Without deliberate intervention RIGHT NOW, AI in Indian education becomes another axis of inequality, not the equalizer we need.
